5 Pressure Washing Mistakes That Damage Your Home
Renting a pressure washer from the hardware store seems simple enough. But without the right technique, you can cause thousands of dollars in damage. Here are the five most common mistakes we see.
1. Using Too Much Pressure on Siding
Vinyl siding should never be hit with high pressure. It can crack, warp, and force water behind the siding into your wall cavity — leading to mold and rot. Soft washing at low pressure is the only safe method for siding.
2. Pressure Washing Your Roof
This is the biggest one. High pressure strips granules off asphalt shingles, voids your warranty, and can cause leaks. Roofs should only be soft washed — low pressure with a chemical solution that kills algae at the root.
3. Using the Wrong Chemicals
Bleach from the store is not the same as the sodium hypochlorite solution professionals use. Wrong concentrations can kill plants, damage surfaces, and leave streaks. We use calibrated SH mixes with bleach-safe surfactants.
4. Not Protecting Landscaping
Chemical overspray can burn plants and grass. We pre-wet and cover landscaping before applying any solution, then rinse everything again after. Skipping this step is one of the most common DIY mistakes.
5. Leaving Zebra Stripes on Concrete
Using a pressure washer wand directly on concrete creates uneven "zebra stripe" patterns. A surface cleaner attachment distributes pressure evenly for a uniform finish. It's the difference between amateur and professional results.
